When processing or analyzing an agressive chemical, it may have adverse effects on the materials that it comes in contact with. For example, nail polish remover, which is primarily acetone, will melt or dissolve many plastic materials. When trying to find if it is safe to introduce an aggressive chemical into a process line or analytical instrument, one must be sure it will not interact with adversely with any of the materials that it will contact.
